BTC/Lightning-funded virtual Visa cards for online spending; program continuity requires verification (the service has had availability gaps)
Review
Overview
This is a real bitcoin card - when it worked. Moon offered Lightning-funded virtual Visa cards for online spending, issued by a crypto-native provider. Bitcoin could be loaded directly on-chain or via Lightning, making it a true BTC spending tool. But the program has been effectively dead since late November 2025: cards were blocked en masse, withdrawals stalled, and support went silent. Despite the website still marketing the product, current operability is unverified and loading funds is high-risk.
Fees in practice
There’s no monthly or annual fee. The first Moon X Card is free; additional cards cost $2.99 each. A 1% fee (minimum $1.00) applies to every transaction. There are no foreign exchange fees. For any purchase, you’ll pay at least $1.00 in transaction fees if the amount is low enough that 1% falls below that threshold. But top-up fees are unclear: while the FAQ lists no fee for buying Moon Credit with BTC, the Terms reserve the right to charge an unspecified “purchase handling fee.” ATM fees don’t apply - there’s no ATM functionality. Inactivity fees aren’t listed, but card balances are forfeited at expiry. With the service non-operational, these fees are currently academic.
Verdict
Do not load funds. Moon’s virtual Visa card worked briefly in 2024 - 2025 but collapsed again in November 2025 with no resolution. Cards are blocked, withdrawals are stuck, and support is silent. While it once offered a clean Lightning-to-VISA flow, it is now a high-risk, non-operational service. Only those comfortable with total loss should consider testing it - and even then, with trivial amounts.
The bitcoin flow
Bitcoin gets onto the card through direct on-chain or Lightning network top-ups - no forced conversion at load. However, the exact moment your bitcoin is sold is not documented. That means you cannot determine when the taxable event occurs. At the point of spending, the card draws from a pre-funded balance (Moon Credit), which you purchase with BTC. Minimum top-up amounts are not specified in official documents, though the non-reloadable Moon 1X Card had a $5 minimum. With the service halted since 2025-11-30, this flow is currently theoretical.
Rewards
Moon does not offer any cashback or rewards program. No documentation from the FAQ, Terms, or homepage mentions rewards, tiers, or incentives. There are no sats-denominated payouts or advertised benefits for using the card. This is purely a spending tool with no return on usage.
Custody & risk
Your funds are held in a custodial model - Moon controls the balances, not you. The operator, PayWithMoon, has low transparency: company details, jurisdiction, and issuer partnerships are not fully verified. The program has suffered two provider collapses (2023 and late 2025), resulting in blocked cards and frozen withdrawals. Reddit threads document users with $530+ stuck for weeks, forced re-KYC via Sumsub, and country-based access denials despite prior verification. The live site returns a Cloudflare 403 to bots, yet still markets card issuance. With facts not fully verified and ongoing red flags, this service carries extreme counterparty risk.
