Bitpanda Card
Bitcoin-Check: this program is ranked in our database but not fully listed — this page answers whether it is a real bitcoin card and what happens to your BTC.
Europe's cleanest all-asset debit card: spend any of 600+ cryptos or even precious metals from one EUR card with zero monthly fees, 0% own FX markup, generous EUR 280k/month limits and an MFSA-regulated issuer. The 1% cashback only pays on crypto payments, ATM withdrawals cost 2%, and it is euro-area only.
The bitcoin flow
Source note
No top-up step exists: at the moment of purchase the selected payment asset is instantly and automatically traded to EUR and deducted from the EUR wallet ('no topping up is necessary'). There is no load/top-up fee; when the payment asset is crypto or metals, the regular asset-dependent Bitpanda trading premium applies to that conversion. Paying directly from the EUR wallet incurs no fee at all.
The honest answer
Overview
The Bitpanda Card is not a real bitcoin card in the sense of preserving your bitcoin flow - it does not allow direct on-chain BTC top-ups or manual control over when your bitcoin is sold. Instead, it’s a custodial Visa debit card from a regulated exchange that lets you spend any of 600+ crypto assets, including BTC, by automatically converting them to EUR at the point of purchase. It’s designed for euro-area residents with fully verified Bitpanda accounts who want to spend diverse holdings with zero monthly fees, high limits, and a regulated issuer.
Fees in practice
The card has no issuance fee, monthly fee, or top-up fee. EUR-denominated transactions incur no additional costs, but spending crypto triggers Bitpanda’s standard trading premium (exact spread not published). For non-EUR transactions, Bitpanda charges no additional FX fee - only Visa’s foreign exchange markup applies. ATM withdrawals cost 2% or EUR 2 minimum, whichever is higher. A EUR 500 ATM withdrawal would cost at least EUR 2. Replacement cards are EUR 5.90; extra physical cards cost EUR 10. No inactivity fee is documented.
Verdict
Avoid if you want to keep your bitcoin self-custodied or control when it’s sold. The Bitpanda Card is best for euro-area users who already hold diverse assets on Bitpanda and want a no-monthly-fee, high-limit Visa card to spend them seamlessly - accepting that each crypto spend triggers an automatic, taxable sale at Bitpanda’s rates.
The bitcoin flow
Bitcoin never sits on the card. When you make a purchase, the card instantly sells your selected crypto - like BTC - from your Bitpanda wallet and converts it to EUR at that moment. This means your bitcoin is sold per transaction, triggering a taxable event each time you spend. There is no separate top-up step or Lightning funding; the conversion happens automatically behind the scenes. Since you don’t control the timing of the sale, you can’t optimize for tax or price, and you’re subject to Bitpanda’s trading premium on every transaction.
Rewards
The card offers 1% cashback, but only when you spend using a crypto asset - spending from your EUR wallet, metals, or stocks doesn’t qualify. Rewards are paid in EUR, not sats or bitcoin, so there’s no exposure to bitcoin’s price volatility. There are no caps or tiers documented, but the restriction to crypto-funded transactions limits when you earn. No rewards are earned on fiat, stablecoin, or metal-based spends.
Custody & risk
Your funds are held in a custodial account with Bitpanda GmbH, a Vienna-based exchange founded in 2014 and regulated under MiCA. The card is issued by Transact Payments Malta Ltd, an MFSA-authorized financial institution (reg C 91879), adding regulatory oversight. However, your crypto and EUR balances are subject to counterparty risk - your assets are not self-custodied. A Reddit user reported their bank classifying Bitpanda transactions as gambling, triggering fees, though Bitpanda denies being a gambling service. All facts are verified as of 2026-09-20.
