ether.fi — Bitcoin-Check
ether.fi Cash
Bitcoin-Check: this program is ranked in our database but not fully listed — this page answers whether it is a real bitcoin card and what happens to your BTC.
A genuinely different architecture: keep full self-custody of 250+ assets and spend through a credit line instead of selling - with tiered memberships, travel cashback and premium Visa perks. The risks are equally clear: borrowing costs, portfolio volatility/liquidation risk, and a protection program that was still 'not yet live' at review time.
The bitcoin flow
Source note
No top-up step exists: the Cash account spends either in Direct Pay mode from your own balance or in Borrow mode (credit line against the portfolio). The official help-center fee article lists no load/top-up fee.
The honest answer
Overview
This is not a traditional bitcoin debit card, but it does allow direct on-chain Bitcoin deposits. You retain self-custody of your assets, including BTC, and spend via a credit line rather than by selling. ether.fi Cash, issued as a Visa credit card by ether.fi, a crypto-native DeFi protocol, is designed for users comfortable with borrowing against a diversified portfolio of 250+ assets. The key innovation is spending without forced BTC sales - though the timing of any required sale is not documented.
Fees in practice
There’s no monthly fee and no documented top-up or load fee. The first virtual card is free for most users but costs $10 in 14 listed regions (e.g., Mexico, South Africa, Philippines). A physical card costs $50 for Core members. Foreign exchange fees are approximately 1% base rate plus a tiered markup: up to 0.5% for Core, 0.25% for Luxe, and none for Pinnacle/VIP. EUR purchases have 0% FX markup. ATM withdrawals allow $1,000 per transaction, up to five per 24 hours ($5,000 daily), with standard network fees applying - no operator fee documented. For a $1,000 non-EUR purchase on Core, expect ~$10.50 in FX fees (1% base + 0.5% markup).
Verdict
This card suits DeFi-savvy users who want to spend without selling BTC and are comfortable with credit-line mechanics and self-custody. It’s not ideal for those seeking bitcoin-denominated rewards or regulatory protections. Given the unresolved questions around cashback and the inactive insurance program, proceed with a small test first.
The bitcoin flow
Bitcoin gets onto the card through direct on-chain deposits to your self-custodied wallet - no forced conversion at load. However, the exact moment your BTC is sold, if at all, is not documented. Since the card operates as a credit line against your portfolio, spending may not trigger a sale unless collateral rebalancing is required. That moment - whenever the operator sells your bitcoin - would be a taxable event in most jurisdictions. There is no Lightning funding. With no top-up step, there’s no minimum load amount.
Rewards
Cashback is advertised at up to 3% on spending, paid in ETHFI tokens, not bitcoin. Core members earn 3% on the first $2,000 monthly spend, then reduced tiers. Travel booked via ether.fi/travel earns 5%. Rewards are locked for seven days and require a $5 minimum to claim. A Reddit user reports cashback being paid instantly in USDC, contradicting official terms - this discrepancy is unresolved. No sats-based rewards are offered.
Custody & risk
You retain self-custody of all assets, including BTC, in a non-custodial setup. The card is issued under separate terms by a third-party provider, and ether.fi is not a regulated financial institution - funds are not FDIC or SIPC insured. A $500,000 insurance-backed protection program is advertised but explicitly marked “not yet live” in official sources. Borrowing against volatile assets carries liquidation risk, a standard DeFi hazard. The program is new and separate from the audited ether.fi protocol. Facts are verified, but the unresolved cashback payout discrepancy noted in a Reddit thread warrants caution.
