Blink Card
The bitcoin flow
Review
Overview
Yes, this is a real bitcoin card. The Blink Card is a prepaid Visa issued by Third National, LLC (Puerto Rico) and powered by Blink Technologies, LLC, a Bitcoin-focused fintech with roots in El Salvador. You can load it directly with on-chain bitcoin, and it supports Lightning funding. The card operates in a non-custodial mode by default, meaning your funds are secured by your keys until you spend. Bitcoin is sold at the point of each transaction, not when you load.
Fees in practice
The Blink Card does not publicly disclose its fee schedule - all fee details live only within the Blink App, which limits transparency. No issuance, monthly, top-up, FX, ATM, or inactivity fees are documented in public sources. The Cardholder Agreement references an “Overdraft Late Repayment Fee” but provides no numbers. Credit Mode, which would allow BTC or stablecoin collateral, is not currently active. Since no fee amounts are published, it is not possible to compute any combined cost example. Fees, if any, are applied at the time of transaction but remain undisclosed outside the app.
Verdict
The Blink Card is a legitimate bitcoin card with direct on-chain loading and non-custodial security, making it appealing for holders who want to spend BTC without pre-converting to fiat. However, the lack of public fee transparency and jurisdictional gating make it risky for users outside known eligible regions. Only consider it if you can verify your eligibility and are comfortable with opaque fee structures.
The bitcoin flow
You load the Blink Card directly with on-chain bitcoin or via Lightning, keeping your bitcoin in your control until a transaction is initiated. Bitcoin is sold per transaction - that is, each time you swipe or tap, your BTC is converted to USD at the prevailing rate. This sale is the tax moment in most jurisdictions, as selling bitcoin triggers a taxable event. At the point of spending, Visa processes the transaction in fiat, so merchants receive dollars, not BTC. There is no documented minimum top-up amount.
Rewards
No rewards or cashback program is documented in the Blink Card’s Cardholder Agreement or public materials. The card does not advertise any incentives for spending, and there is no mention of sats or bitcoin-denominated rewards. If rewards exist, they are not publicly disclosed.
Custody & risk
The Blink Card uses a hybrid custody model: in Non-Custodial Mode, your funds are secured by your cryptographic keys until you initiate a transaction, at which point they are converted and processed. The issuer, Third National, LLC, is a Puerto Rico-licensed lender, and the program is managed by Signify Holdings, Inc. However, the technology provider, Blink Technologies, LLC, is incorporated under the Próspera ZEDE special jurisdiction in Roatán, Honduras - an unusual legal venue with limited precedent. Fees and eligible jurisdictions are gated behind the app, reducing transparency. Data quality is verified, but the lack of public fee disclosure means a small test load is prudent.
