Bitpanda Card
Europe's cleanest all-asset debit card: spend any of 600+ cryptos or even precious metals from one EUR card with zero monthly fees, 0% own FX markup, generous EUR 280k/month limits and an MFSA-regulated issuer. The 1% cashback only pays on crypto payments, ATM withdrawals cost 2%, and it is euro-area only.
The bitcoin flow
Source note: No top-up step exists: at the moment of purchase the selected payment asset is instantly and automatically traded to EUR and deducted from the EUR wallet ('no topping up is necessary'). There is no load/top-up fee; when the payment asset is crypto or metals, the regular asset-dependent Bitpanda trading premium applies to that conversion. Paying directly from the EUR wallet incurs no fee at all.
Review
Overview
The Bitpanda Card is a Visa debit card issued by Transact Payments Malta Limited and offered by Bitpanda, a regulated Austrian exchange founded in 2014. It is designed for euro-area residents who want to spend any of 600+ crypto assets or precious metals directly. The card is physical-only, with no virtual option, and operates on a custodial model. Bitcoin does not load directly onto the card; instead, at the moment of purchase, your selected crypto asset is instantly converted to EUR at Bitpanda’s trading rate and deducted from your EUR wallet - meaning the sale occurs at point of transaction.
Fees & Costs
The Bitpanda Card has no account opening fee, monthly fee, or initial shipment cost. There is no top-up or load fee, and payments in EUR incur no transaction fees. However, when paying with crypto or metals, the standard Bitpanda trading premium applies during the automatic conversion to EUR. For non-EUR transactions, Bitpanda charges 0% FX fee, though Visa’s foreign exchange markup still applies. ATM withdrawals incur a 2% fee or a minimum of EUR 2, whichever is higher, plus potential local surcharges. A replacement card costs EUR 5.90, and each additional physical card is EUR 10. No inactivity fee is documented.
KYC & Onboarding
Full KYC is required: you must have a fully verified Bitpanda account and be a resident of a euro-area country. Identity verification occurs during signup via Bitpanda’s standard process, though users verified through Bankident are currently unable to order the card. Proof of funds may be requested, which can temporarily block card payouts until approved. Once approved, the physical card ships within 3 - 7 working days. The process is fully digital, with no option for anonymous or partial KYC access.
Coins & Top-up
Bitcoin and other crypto assets cannot be directly loaded onto the Bitpanda Card. Instead, at the moment of purchase, your selected crypto is instantly converted to EUR and drawn from your EUR wallet - this means the bitcoin sale occurs at point of transaction. Lightning Network funding is not supported. You can spend any of Bitpanda’s 600+ crypto assets, precious metals, or Bitpanda Stocks, all of which are auto-converted to EUR at point of sale. There is no minimum top-up amount, but no separate top-up step exists - spending triggers the conversion automatically.
Rewards
The Bitpanda Card offers 1% cashback, but only when a crypto asset is used as the payment source. Cashback is paid in EUR and has no documented cap or tier structure. Payments made directly from the EUR wallet, Bitpanda Stocks, metals, or stablecoins do not qualify for cashback. Since rewards are paid in fiat, they do not expose you to cryptocurrency volatility after payout, but the incentive is limited to crypto-sourced transactions.
Reliability & Red Flags
Bitpanda, founded in 2014 and based in Vienna, is one of Europe’s largest regulated crypto platforms, now operating under MiCA-era licensing. The card is issued by Transact Payments Malta Limited, an MFSA-authorized financial institution (reg C 91879), ensuring a regulated and transparent issuer. No incidents specific to the card program have been documented. External sources include Reddit threads where users report successful use of the card for savings plans and official Bitpanda staff confirming availability in Austria. One thread warns of banks misclassifying Bitpanda transactions as gambling, triggering unwanted fees - this is a bank-side issue, not a platform flaw. Data quality is verified, and the card relaunched with a new activation flow in April 2025.
Verdict
The Bitpanda Card is a reliable choice for euro-area residents who want to spend a wide range of crypto assets and precious metals with high limits and no monthly fees. It offers regulated issuer backing and seamless integration with a major exchange, but requires full KYC and excludes Bankident-verified users. Use it if you prioritize asset breadth and regulatory compliance over privacy and direct BTC control.
