Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza, Minister of Water and Electricity, will promote the adaptation of blockchain technology in Bahrain in his area of responsibility. This he said at the conference “SmartSec Security and Blockchain”. The areas of cybersecurity and decentralized administration are of particular interest to the Kingdom.

The Kingdom of Bahrain consists of a total of 33 islands – a mini-state that nevertheless needs a lot of administration. So it is no wonder that Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza, as a member of the Committee for Information and Communication Technology, spoke out in favour of the use of blockchain technology:

“Technologies like Blockchain are taking us a big step forward in finding a secure way to facilitate transactions. Blockchain’s ability to protect users’ data is a real advance. Especially due to the fact that they can be used in different companies from different industries, including cyber security,” he said.

Ultimately, it is the blockchain technology with its decentralized structure for which the minister sees great advantages in the organization for the constitutional monarchy. He also said that the company wanted to strengthen its position in the area of cyber security:

“This is the kind of initiative we want from the Bahraini companies so that innovations can emerge in the great minds of this community. Cyber security is an essential part of our lives because most of our daily lives involve the use of technology in one way or another. These global cyber attacks affected more than 60 countries last year, including Bahrain, and the Central Bank of Bahrain recently warned banks and financial institutions of planned orchestrated attacks on ATMs around the world.”

Infrastructure in Bahrain ready for expansion

Ultimately, however, Bahrain apparently still lacks the necessary infrastructure. But here, too, people have high expectations for the future. Mirza continues:

“The question of information security is very important if our lives are to shift more into the digital realm. We have to make sure that the power supply that makes all this digital technology secure and immune to cyber attacks works.

About Bahrain

Bahrain is an island state on an archipelago in the Persian Gulf, east of Saudi Arabia. The name Bahrain means “Two Seas”. The island literally has two seas: the sea that surrounds the island and a sea of groundwater. A dam completed in 1986 connects the country with the Saudi coast.

Bahrain was the first emirate in the Gulf to export oil. However, the intensively used oil and gas reserves are expected to be exhausted by 2015. This is why efforts are being made to expand the service sector with offshore banking, insurance and tourism.

Climate

Bahrain has a warm and humid subtropical climate with high humidity. Mainly a humid hot wind blows from the northwest (Shamal), sometimes also a dry hot south wind (Qaus) from the Great Arab Desert. The monthly mean temperatures lie between 17 °C (January) and 33.5 °C (July), the precipitation amounts to only 70 mm.

Origin of the name

The name derives from the Arabic al-baḥr (“the sea”); literally al-Bahrain means “the two seas”.
